Aquaculture and Seafood Production Facility

Aquaculture lab

The Virginia Tech Aquaculture and Seafood Production Facility is located on campus in the Food Science and Technology building. This 5,000 square foot facility is home to 30 recirculating aquaculture systems designed to culture cold-water, warm-water, and marine species of fish and shellfish. The production facility is supported by a wet lab, diagnostic labs, and a biosafety level-2 lab for aquatic pathogen study. This facility is supports our research on water chemistry, aquaculture nutrition, and more, and our work with industry partners.

The Virginia Seafood Agricultural Research and Extension Center hosts our seafood extension faculty and research. This facility houses Dr. Katheryn Parraga, our Muscle Food Safety Extension Specialist, and her work enhancing and disseminating seafood safety information to businesses and communities throughout Virginia.
