OktoberFST Alumni Tailgate
We started OktoberFST in 2022 to give alumni an opportunity to come back to campus, spend time with students, faculty/staff, and other alumni, and to just have a lot of fun! Enjoy classic catered German dishes, tour our facilities, toast friends new and old with a Fightin' Hokies Lager, win Virginia Tech-themed prizes in the raffle, and more! Kids of all ages welcome. OktoberFST is held outside HABB1 annually in the fall. Exact dates and times for this event vary from year to year, so stay tuned to our social media pages for up to date news.
Alumni Weekend is an exciting summer tradition alumni look forward to all year long. Celebrate your class reunion, reconnect with your student organization and friends, and meet new Hokies! Return to Blacksburg to explore campus, have fun, and learn. Alumni Weekend is for all Hokies! Registration includes access to all scheduled events, including tours and sessions, plus meals, happy hours, and drinks! When you sign up, the weekend is all inclusive.
Celebrate Homecoming with your fellow Hokies. Events will be scheduled all week long for alumni, students, and friends. Join fellow alumni for kickoff, check out the annual Hokie parade, watch the Drillfield firework show, and experience Homecoming Court. Homecoming is held each fall. For up to date news, dates, and events, go to the Virginia Tech Homecoming page.
There are countless ways for you to get involved with the department! Your journey since graduation holds immeasurable value for our students. Whether through mentorship programs, guest lectures, or networking events, your involvement can profoundly impact the growth and success of the next generation of food scientists. Talk to the Food Science Club about internships. Guest lecture in a specific class. Sponsor and present a scholarship award at the annual FST Scholarship Awards. Provide an opportunity for students to visit your business and get some hands-on experience in a new area. Sharing your wisdom and experiences can make a big impact on our students.
Want to get involved with FST? Contact Dr. Herbert Bruce or Alex Hood about opportunities to give back to food science students.
Alumni Spotlight
“My degree in food science, with a specialty in food safety, grounded me in science, which has been the hallmark of the work I’ve been able to do as a researcher, policy maker, and university administrator. There is no doubt in my mind that it was my experience at Virginia Tech that gave me my first taste for how science can be used to solve the world’s toughest problems.”
-Dr. Elsa Murano (‘87)
Director of the Norman Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture at Texas A&M University
The Alumni Engagement Committee is responsible for all alumni event planning and outreach. Reach out to the committee if you have event ideas, questions, or just want to stop by and visit FST!
