Researcher in Sensory Evaluation Lab

Opportunities for Prospective Students

Are you passionate about food, flavor, and the science behind human perception? The Virginia Tech Sensory Evaluation Laboratory offers exciting opportunities for students to engage in hands-on research, gain valuable experience, and contribute to innovations in food science.

What We Do

Our lab conducts cutting-edge sensory research that supports both academic inquiry and industry innovation. We explore how people experience food through taste, smell, and texture—using rigorous scientific methods and industry-relevant tools.

Student Involvement

Students can participate in the lab in a variety of ways:

  • Undergraduate Research: Join ongoing projects as a research assistant and learn how sensory data is collected, analyzed, and applied.

  • Graduate Research: Conduct thesis or dissertation work in sensory science, consumer behavior, or food product development.

  • Course Integration: Engage with the lab through coursework in Food Science & Technology, including sensory evaluation, product development, and food chemistry.

  • Internships & Bridge Experience Projects: Collaborate with faculty and industry partners on real-world challenges in food innovation.

Skills You’ll Gain

  • Sensory testing design and execution

  • Data collection and statistical analysis

  • Consumer research methodologies

  • Communication and teamwork in a lab setting

  • Exposure to industry-standard software and equipment

Facilities

Located in the Human and Agricultural Biosciences Building (HABB1), our 1,278-square-foot lab includes:

  • 10 individual sensory booths with LED lighting and data terminals

  • A controlled test kitchen for sample preparation

  • A focus group room with audio/video recording
