We understand the importance of financial support in ensuring that our students receive a top-tier education without unnecessary financial burdens. Virginia Tech offers a range of scholarships, including many that are specific to students within the Department of Food Science and Technology.


Application Process for Scholarships


Prospective and current students may submit an application each year for consideration of scholarships for the upcoming year. All scholarships are managed centrally by the Finanical Aid office, via Scholarship Central.

Scholarships Open to FST Students


The Department of Food Science and Technology at Virginia Tech offers many opportunities for students in the department to receive financial awards. Browse them below, sorted by the criteria required to apply.

Naval ROTC

FST is now a tier 2 NROTC approved undergraduate major, meaning that NROTC students who select FST as their major can receive full ROTC scholarships. This excludes the Business program option. See the full list of NROTC approved Virginia Tech majors. 

Boyd-Arline Scholarship

Historically awarded to a minority FST student with good academic standing. This scholarship is given in honor of Neal Boyd and Marcella K. Arline.

Hardywood Park Craft Brewery Scholarship

Given to students pursuing degrees in food science and technology with the food and beverage fermentation option. The scholarship supports the student’s tuition, room, and board. This scholarship is funded by revenue generated from the licensed recipes for Fightin’ Hokies beer through a partnership between Virginia Tech and Hardywood Park Craft Brewery.

Marvin Poster Memorial Scholarship

Historically given to an FST student focusing in the area of poultry and is based on merit and financial need.

Virginia Association of Meat Processors Fund

Historically awarded to a student in FST who has an interest in, or emphasis on meat products.

W. F. Collins Memorial Scholarship

Historically awarded to a student in FST with an interest in milk and/or milk products. This scholarship is given in memory of William F. Collins, an FST Dairy Foods Faculty who had an emphasis on dairy extension.

Carolina – Virginia Dairy Award

Historically awarded to a student in FST with and emphasis and interest in dairy products.

Cameron Hackney Memorial Enrichment Fund

Given to students in FST to be used for educational enrichment activities and is based on academic merit. This scholarship is given in memory of Cameron Hackney.

Paul M. Large Scholarship

Historically awarded to a student in FST based on academic merit, financial need, extracurricular activities, community service, and good character.

Corey & Charlene Berends Scholarship

Given to an undergraduate in FST based on financial need.

FST Achievement Award

Awarded to a student in FST, given to enhance the undergraduate student experience

FST Outstanding Senior

Given to the FST Outstanding Senior.

Sabra Dipping Company Scholarship

Awarded to an undergraduate student in FST with no specific criteria.

Tyson Foods Fund for Excellence

Awarded to an undergraduate student in FST with no specific criteria.

R. F. Kelly Scholarship

Awarded to an undergraduate student in FST with no specific criteria.

Institute of Food Technologists Scholarships

The Institute of Food Technologists offers a variety of scholarships for students who major in Food Science and will become IFT members.
